Competing for Development

This is a book of essays covering some of the more interesting topics on the impact of increasing competitive capacity on self-sustaining growth and development in Caribbean economies. Our main aim is to help people face some of the basic realities and find the answers to the fundamental questions that have arisen over many decades about how post-colonial Caribbean countries can pursue development in the real world where competition rules.

To this end, the essays move along quite rapidly from the international context through optimisation theory to historical evidence, and then to identification of critical policies to support competitive strategy. The only requirement for grasping our arguments is a knowledge of basic calculus and statistical data analysis. A major focus is the impact of government policies on innovation, education, and the development of the governance framework on optimal competitive strategy.
